The Next Ball Mindset: Why Staying Present Wins More Points
Tennis is a game of constant recovery. You win a point, lose a point, net a routine volley -- and the very next choice you make matters more than the one before it. That's the foundation of the Next Ball mindset: instead of replaying what just happened, we train players to reset, refocus, and compete fully on whatever comes next.
In every private lesson, we build this habit on purpose. After a missed shot, we don't dwell -- we cue a quick reset (a breath, a phrase, a routine) and move straight into the next rep. Over time, that becomes automatic. Players stop tying their effort to the last outcome and start bringing the same intensity to point one and point thirty.
This matters as much for adults chasing consistency as it does for competitive juniors. Confidence on the court isn't about never missing -- it's about how fast you get back to neutral after you do. That's a skill, and like any skill, it's coachable.
If you're working on staying present during matches, bring it up in your next session. We'll build it into your practice plan alongside the technical and tactical work you're already doing.
